Architectural vs. 3-Tab Shingles: Which Is Right for Your Home?

By Magothy Roofing and Exteriors • 2026-04-27

If you are pricing a roof replacement, the biggest material decision for most homes is architectural (dimensional) shingles versus traditional 3-tab. Here is how they actually compare for Anne Arundel County homes.

What’s the Difference?

3-tab shingles are a single flat layer with cutouts creating the look of three smaller tabs. They are the budget option and dominated roofs built before the 2000s.

Architectural shingles laminate multiple layers, creating a thicker, dimensional profile that mimics wood shake. They are now the standard for most replacements.

Lifespan and Warranty

In our climate, 3-tab shingles realistically deliver 12–18 years; architectural shingles 22–30 with proper ventilation. Manufacturer warranties reflect this — typically 25 years versus “limited lifetime.”

Wind Resistance — the Chesapeake Factor

This is where the difference matters most locally. Standard 3-tab shingles are commonly rated to 60–70 mph; architectural shingles to 110–130 mph when properly installed. Nor’easters and summer squalls regularly gust past 3-tab ratings — which is why so many storm-damage calls we take are 3-tab roofs.

Cost

Architectural shingles typically cost 15–25% more in materials. On a full replacement, where labor, tear-off, underlayment, and flashing are identical either way, the total project difference is usually modest — and the added lifespan and wind rating usually pay for it.

Curb Appeal and Resale

Architectural shingles read as a premium roof from the street and are increasingly expected by buyers. In neighborhoods like Olde Severna Park, Chartridge, and Round Bay, they are effectively the default.

Our Honest Take

For a home you plan to keep, architectural shingles are almost always the better value in this climate. For a short-term rental or a budget-constrained flip, 3-tab still has a place. We quote both on request — free and in writing. Call Magothy Roofing and Exteriors at 410-793-9516.
